Wetenschappers van MIT hebben een vleesrobotje ontworpen dat zonder grote ingrepen voorwerpen zoals batterijtjes uit je maag kan verwijderen.

Wetenschappers hebben een klein en eetbaar robotje ontwikkeld met behulp van de ingewanden van varkens dat voorwerpen kan verzamelen die je per ongeluk hebt ingeslikt. Enorm handig dus, want tot nu toe moesten patiënten dan gewoon onder het mes gaan. De robot is gemaakt van een magneet die bevestigd is aan gedroogd vlees, vaak gebruikt voor de velletjes van worsten. Er is geen elektriciteit of energiebron nodig naast de magneet van het robotje. Dokters kunnen buiten het lichaam magneten gebruiken om het robotje te geleiden. Wees echter niet bang dat je een volledige robot in moet slikken, want aan het begin is het een kleine capsule met ijs eromheen. Zodra je het hebt ingeslikt en het ijs gesmolten is zal het vlees zich ontvouwen waardoor de robot meer oppervlakte heeft.
Wetenschappers van MIT hebben het robotje getest met horlogebatterijtjes die ze verstopten in een nagemaakte maag. Ze kochten een varkensmaag om een model te modelleren dat vervolgens met water en limoensap werd gevuld om maagzuur te simuleren. De robot kon binnen korte tijd de batterij meeslepen met zijn eigen magneet, waardoor het experiment dus een succes was. Nu denk je, wat moet je nou met batterijtjes, maar alleen al in Amerika worden er jaarlijks duizenden horlogebatterijtjes ingeslikt, wat leidt tot brandwonden in je maag. Niet zo prettig dus, en dit ludieke robotje kan dat soort problemen relatief gemakkelijk en goedkoop oplossen. Uiteindelijk kunnen dit soort origami robots gebruikt worden om wonden te verzorgen of medicijnen aan te brengen binnen het lichaam. De wetenschappers willen ook sensoren aanbrengen en de robot opnieuw ontwerpen zodat het geen magneten meer nodig heeft om door het lichaam te bewegen.
