Op naar de toekomst!
Mini, een dochtermaatschappij van BMW, onthulde dit weekend haar nieuwe concept voor een augmented reality autorij-bril. BMW denkt namelijk dat we met behulp van augmented reality beter kunnen autorijden. De reden dat het bedrijf voor Mini kiest om de bril te testen is dat Mini een vrij jonge doelgroep heeft, die eerder ontvankelijk zullen zijn voor nieuwe technologische snufjes. Het eerste prototype laat je navigatie-details, je snelheid en andere informatie zien a la de Google Glass, bondig gepresenteerd op je netvlies. De bril wordt aangestuurd door een bijbehorende app voor je smartphone, en laat je ook bellen. Klinkt allemaal vrij standaard zou je zeggen, maar het ambitieuze aan BMW/Mini’s project is dat ze willen dat je de bril ook buiten de auto draagt.
De bril kan bijvoorbeeld ook informatie herkennen in de folder van je lokale supermarkt, wat betekent dat het prototype direct concurreert met onder andere Google Glass en Microsoft’s Hololens. Tijdens de eerste demo van het product werd vooral gefocust op de auto-functies, dus of het een interessant alternatief wordt voor het gros augmented reality brillen die er binnenkort aankomen moeten we nog afwachten. Toch is het goed om te zien dat steeds meer partijen een gok gaan wagen, wat alleen maar goed uit kan pakken voor de consument.

De specificaties van de bril zijn als volgt: het prototype wordt aangestuurd door een Qualcomm 805 Snapdragon processor met 2GB aan RAM-geheugen en heeft twee HD schermen. Naast de app en knoppen op je stuur kun je acties uitvoeren met knoppen op het frame van Mini’s bril. Naast de extra informatie die op je netvlies gepresenteerd wordt wil BMW de weg veiliger maken door blinde hoeken te elimineren: aan de zijkanten van de auto’s zijn kleine camera’s ingebouwd, en als de chauffeur naar achteren kijkt, kan hij/zij naar de feed van die camera’s kijken.
De doelen die BMW zichzelf met dit prototype stelt zijn vrij ambitieus, maar onthoud dat het echt nog een onderzoeks-project is. De komende jaren zul je het dus toch echt zonder deze bril moeten doen terwijl je naar de supermarkt scheurt.
