Google heeft opeens per verrassing een developer preview van Android N uitgebracht, de volgende grote update voor Google’s mobiele besturingssysteem. Normaliter kondigt Google Android updates tijdens Google I/O aan, een event voor ontwikkelaars dat halverwege mei plaats vindt. Als je dus een ontwikkelaar bent of niet vies bent van wat experimentele functies, dan kun je nu Android N downloaden voor de Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Pixel C Nexus 9, en de Nexus Player. Google brengt de preview bewust al eerder uit zodat merken zoals Samsung en Sony nog meer tijd hebben om de update zo snel mogelijk uit te rollen.
Voor de meesten onder ons is de developer preview gewoon een mooi voorproefje van wat Google in haar volgende grote update gaat verwerken. Dus blijf lekker veilig bij de versie van Android die je nu hebt, want we zetten 5 nieuwe Android N functies op een rijtje. Er zijn nog veel meer (kleine) veranderingen, maar dit zijn de features die je echt niet mag missen.
1. Multi-Window
Multi-window is iets waar gebruikers al lang om zeuren, vooral als het om tablets gaat. Smartphones krijgen tegenwoordig steeds grotere schermen, en het is dan ook zonde dat veel apps niet gebruik maken van al die ruimte. Met de multi-window API van Android N kan je twee apps naast elkaar zetten: je kunt dus Whatsappen terwijl je een film kijkt, het weer checken terwijl je op Facebook zit, of een notitie maken terwijl je naar nieuwe schoenen zoekt. Ontwikkelaars moeten wel aanzetten dat je hun app in de multi-window modus mag gebruiken, en schermen kunnen zowel horizontaal als verticaal gesplit worden.
2. Nieuwe notificaties beantwoorden
Google heeft de notificaties een makeover gegeven: ze zijn niet alleen heel anders vormgegeven, maar ze laten je ook direct notificaties van bijvoorbeeld Whatsapp, Twitter of SMS antwoorden. Dat alles gebeurt in je notificatie balk, dus je hoeft niet je huidige app te verlaten. Je kunt dus snel een sms van je moeder antwoorden terwijl je op Facebook zit, zonder dat je de Facebook app hoeft te verlaten. Ook worden meerdere notificaties van dezelfde handig gebundeld, zodat niet één app je hele notificatie centrum kan overspoelen.

3. Nog meer batterij
Dit zal voor de meeste Android gebruikers de grootste gamechanger zijn: sinds Android Marshmallow heeft Google een speciale modus in Android ingebouwd, genaamd Doze, die er voor zorgt dat je smartphone als het ware in een soort power-saving modus gaat als je telefoon langere tijd stil ligt. Processen die op de achtergrond draaien en je apps worden even bevroren, terwijl je nog steeds wel gewoon nieuwe notificaties kunt ontvangen. Dat bespaart enorm veel batterij, en gebruikers van Android Marshmallow zijn dan ook ontzettend enthousiast. Met Android N gaat Google nog een stapje verder, want Doze werkt nu ook als je simpelweg je scherm uit zet. Je smartphone hoeft dus niet meer stil te liggen, wat betekent dat je nog meer batterij zult besparen!
4. Data Saver
Niemand houdt er van als je databundel opeens op is, en Google werkt dan ook al langere tijd aan een techniek die er voor zorgt dat je smartphone minder data gebruikt. Als je de nieuwe Data Saver modus aan zet, dan kunnen apps die op de achtergrond draaien minder snel je data opslurpen, en worden foto’s en video’s op websites bijvoorbeeld niet meer automatisch gedownload. Je kunt ook zelf apps kiezen die wel gewoon je 4G of 3G mogen gebruiken, zodat je niet dingen hoeft te missen. Er zijn natuurlijk all apps die je helpen met het besparen van data, maar Google’s ingebouwde systeem is net wat effectiever.
5. Picture-in-Picture
Gebruikers van Sony Xperia smartphones zullen dit al kennen: met Picture-in-Picture mode kun je een Youtube video kijken terwijl je aan het whatsappen bent, of natuurlijk een andere app. Je kunt het vergelijken met de Youtube app, waarin je ook een video rechts onderin kunt kijken terwijl je ondertussen naar een andere video zoekt.
