Zit je dan met je goede gedrag, netjes een windows 8 licentie/upgrade gekocht voor je 3 jaar oude machine, met smart zit je te wachten op dé update die windows 8 nóg beter gaat maken, ERROR. Uw CPU wordt niet ondersteund, wordt er botweg gemeld.
Nu is dat gegeven op zichzelf al vreemd te noemen, want hoe haalt Microsoft het in zijn hoofd om binnen een Windows versie ineens de spelregels of de hardware eisen zo drastisch aan te passen? Daar ga ik maar niet dieper op in, dat wordt overal op het internet al druk bevochten. Liever presenteer ik een (mogelijke) oplossing, zodat je toch nog die gewilde 8.1 update kunt installeren.
Een blik op de documentatie die Microsoft geeft, leert ons dat je CPU 3 dingen in elk geval moet ondersteunen (aldus Microsoft):
- PAE biedt 32-bits processors de mogelijkheid om meer dan 4 GB aan fysiek geheugen te gebruiken onder versies van Windows die daartoe in staat zijn en is een vereiste voor NX.
- NX stelt de processor in staat de pc te beschermen tegen aanvallen door schadelijke software.
- SSE2 is een standaardinstructieset die steeds vaker wordt gebruikt door apps van derden en stuurprogramma’s.
PAE is over het algemeen wel actief op pc’s die jonger zijn dan 5 jaar, NX en SSE2 zijn hoogstwaarschijnlijk de boosdoeners. Beide zijn sinds de introductie van de Intel Pentium 4 & de AMD K8 processoren ingebakken. Dan kun je de conclusie trekken dat er dus ‘aansturing’ nodig is, vanuit je BIOS. Tijd om een BIOS update te doen!*
