Een groep onderzoekers aan de Universiteit van Cornell in Ithaca, Verenigde Staten, zijn erin geslaagd een transistor te ontwikkelen die slechts drie atomen dik is. De doorbraak opent nieuwe deuren voor de drang om elektronica steeds maar dunner te maken.
Overgangsmetaal
Het team heeft met deze uitvinding de grenzen opgezocht van het tot nu toe schaars geproduceerde overgangsmetaal dichalcogenide. De superdunne laagjes die voor dit soort toepassingen werden gebruikt waren lastig te produceren, dat is één van de problemen die het team heeft opgelost. Daarnaast zijn zij er ook in geslaagd om de laagjes nog dunner te maken dan tot nu toe ‘gebruikelijk’ was. Het team is er in geslaagd de dikte tot het uiterste limiet te brengen van de atomische schaal, namelijk een dikte van slechts drie atomen, zoals ook te lezen in de laatste uitgave van Nature.
De nieuwe manier van werken plus de oplossing om dit op grote schaal te kunnen produceren brengt een grote mogelijkheid voor superdunne en flexibele elektronica, weergave technologie en de techniek die gebruikt wordt bij zonnepanelen voor het omzetten van licht naar elektriciteit.
Productie
De onderzoekers hebben tijdens het proces 200 van zulke dunne transistor plaatjes gemaakt, waarvan het uiteindelijk maar twee zijn mislukt. Bij een slagingspercentage van maar liefst 99% is het wel vast te stellen dat de productie snel kan verlopen. De consistentie van de plaatjes kan nog wel wat verbetering gebruiken volgens het team, daar hopen zij dan ook nog verbeteringen in aan te brengen.
Bij de oude manier was het grootste gevaar dat de plaatjes kapot gingen tijdens het productie proces, vooral omdat de plaatjes zo dun zijn. De nieuwe manier werkt beter, hierbij gebruikt het team een mix van diethyl sulfide en een metalen hexacarbonyl samenstelling, dit plaatsen zij op een siliconen plaatje. Dit gaat als geheel 26 uur in een ‘oven’ waar het gebakken wordt met waterstofgas
De Wet van Moore
Saien Xie, één van de onderzoekers en schrijvers van het artikel gaf aan dat de nieuwe bevindingen van het overgangsmetaal dichalcogenide samen met het wondermateriaal grafeen ervoor kunnen zorgen dat de Wet van Moore langer in leven gehouden kan worden. Deze verschillende materialen bieden namelijk een prima basis voor het steeds maar groeiende aantal schakels wat ingenieurs bijvoorbeeld in een processor kunnen krijgen.
Zoals veel van dit soort nieuwe technologieën zal het niet heel erg lang duren voordat je dit terugvind in je superdunne smartphone.
